“For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever” (1 John 2:16-17).

When we hook into the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, we’re tying ourselves to things that “pass away.” Attachment to those things is what pulls us towards death. The more we remove bonds to those three things, the more life flows through us.

We tend to focus on lust–the lust of the flesh or the lust of the eyes. We barely notice the force that often controls those things behind the scenes–the pride of life. What is the pride of life? 

Pride as Life's CEO

Imagine hiring pride to be the CEO of your life. Its job is to direct everything so you stay in control. Unsubmitted to God. Putting yourself first. 

The pride of life aims to preserve, exalt, and glorify self above all else. It wants to be the central figure in your life—directing your choices, relationships, and even spiritual growth. Its desires may appear noble. But beware. Its true motive is to exalt the things inside you that are tied to death, not life. 

5 Ways the Pride of Life Deceives You

One of the things that’s so destructive about the pride of life is it hides itself carefully. Like a well-camouflaged soldier, its presence often goes undetected. Here are five ways the pride of life deceives and destroys people's lives. It makes you feel:

• Satisfied with where you are spiritually without wanting to grow 
• That you've sacrificed for God far more deeply than you have
• That others need to benefit from a teaching, but you've already mastered the principle
• That you’re more spiritually mature than you are
• Small changes you've made are all you need to do--so that you never fully submit your will to Yahweh's.

The pride of life can deceive you. It can derail you. It can destroy you. Dealing with it is a secret to producing long-lasting fruit in our lives.
